OUGD 505 : EVALUATION

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

During this module we have done a lot of work on concept development, which is something that I have found useful as I really love design that is aesthetically pleasing but also really clever, which I think comes from having a strong concept. Through gaining the skills and knowledge of different ways as to how to generate concepts I will be able to apply it to future briefs, and have applied the techniques in this module.

What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

In this module I did a lot of research in to book binding, so applied this research to my practical experimenting with different binding techniques that I haven't used before. This was useful to do because it meant that my research was relevant and I used it and now have new knowledge and experience in binding. Another method of design production I used was analogue photography. I usually if its relevant, take photographs during briefs for primary research, but in this project the photography was part of the project, it was enjoyable to experiment with a different image making tool and I really enjoyed the fact that the work I was using in the publications was my own. I also experimented with film briefly, to mock up how I would want my exhibition projection to look. I really love moving image and think it can be so stunning and capture so much and wanted to experiment with it, but due to time constraints and my priority being the identity and products of the exhibition rather than the exhibition it's self, the film was put on the back burner and the mock up is bother special, but it was interesting to experiment with new software as I hadn't used final cut before and was a good experiment to do.

What strengths and weaknesses can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I really enjoyed how this module has been very concept driven, and it has really made me aware of the importance of design with a meaning and how it has so much more power and effectiveness, then when people design because it looks nice or is on trend. I think a strength of mine during this module has be concept development and problem solving. I chose quite an abstract 'good is' being looking up, rather then doing something physical like a food or person, so didn't help myself in terms of having a simple ride for this module, but I enjoy challenging myself so it was a good thing. Because of choosing a good that is abstract I had to do a lot of problem solving during this module an feel my skills improved in that seance. A weakness I encounted was time management. Although I got everything I wanted to done it was hard work due to the fact I hadn't left enough time for production and had forgotten how time consuming making all the products physically of a range is. I also didn't leave enough time or pencil in time for mistakes, so when screen printing didn't go to plan, I annoyingly had to boy-cot the whole thing and print the poster digital because there was not time to go back screen printing. I am determined to not let this kind of thing happen again as rushing the production means the standard is not as high as it could be and things potentially could go wrong, so I will write a plan next time and try and stick to it.

Identify the things you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Leave more time for production and print so that my work is high quality

Use the college facilities such as photography studio to photograph my work as I think It makes such a big difference to the end product photographs and makes the work come across more professional

GOOD IS : LOOKING UP - evaluation & photographed products

Evaluation :

The brief asked us to practically and conceptually explore the possible products, ranges and method distribution to do with our selected direction, mind being 'an exhibition of' within this I chose to look at range of areas the relate to exhibitions, that being branding and identity, publishing and editorial, product and packaging and retail and promotion. We were asked to work across a broad range of medias and formats, which I achieved through creating my range of products. I worked 2d, 3d and 4d using different formats so feel I have achieved this part of the brief. I would have liked to experiment more across printing techniques, but due to the fact my screen printing didn't work out because the screen I prepared and exposed was blocked with glue, something you can't see until the screens exposed and washed out, then you will see the blocks, I hadn't penciled in enough time for error with screen print so had to boycott the whole mission which was a shame, but I have learnt that I must include time for error, especially when in comes to print and production of products. This module was very focused on concept generation which I feel really helped in creating a solid and clever concept that people will notice, rather then just 'pretty graphic design' a strong concept makes you think, which makes a massive difference by making it way more memorable. I am happy with the range of products that I have produced I feel they are all appropriate to my concept and all designed with context and audience always in mind. My concept was ever developing through this project which meant that the designing part was delays slightly as I wanted to get the concept spot on, so I had to keep going back to research and tweaking the concept, I found this a really useful expierence as it highlighted how worthwhile it is to push a concept further until it is spot on. Once the concept is good to go it makes the designing part come together a lot more fluidly which was a nice experience.  Overall I am happy with the products I have produced for what is good, I have designed with a concept in mind and tried to make some creative and innovative products.

GOOD IS : LOOK UP - Research book & evaluation

Research Book :

This brief was about exploring the relationship between content, context and product in relation to our individually identified subject theme. Mine was looking at looking up in relation to an exhibition. I set out a plan and divided my areas of research to fit in with the areas previously just mentioned. This way of working ensured that I had a thorough and appropriate research, I wasn't research for the sake of researching, I was researching with intent, which meant that what I gained from the research was a lot more relevant to my my project. By breaking down the research It also meant that nothing got miss out, or if something was missing from the research, it was obvious to spot. I found the challenge of making our research book appropriate in format to our subject area really interesting. publications are so often just normal bog standard books, so it was a good opportunity to remember that publications can take whatever format we see fit for the brief. Making my book fit in with looking up was an enjoyable challenge that was satisfying when it all came together and successfully embodies the concept of looking up as you have to hold the book up to the light and 'look up' to read the text as it shines through. I found putting my research at that stage into a book useful, as it is so often that there is so much researching going on that you end up forgetting the initial research which is usually of importance, so having this reference was a useful tool.
