PRINT MANUAL : SAMPLES

Samples of print :

Example of layout for samples. I want the cover of my book to be a
throw out and for the samples to fit inside that.

I have chosen to experiment with types of print, to give my audience a chance to see what finishes are like in person. The samples I will create will be:

- Screen print
- Foiling
- Spot Varnish
- Die cut

printing was really successful, got some decent samples, which I think will help aid my print manual. It will put what I am talking about in the manual into concept and reality as they will be able to touch and see the samples.

Example of letterpress :

I contacted a wedding invitation company who specialise in letter press and got a sample. I really love the way the paper is bruised and indented, I think it adds so much more character and texture.

BOOK BINDS

book biding is something I find interesting and enjoy doing. I found this old video about book binding, it would be interesting to compare it to how books are bound today

PRINT PROCESS : LETTER PRESS

Two really interesting videos about letterpress one old set in 1947 and the other in recent years. I find it so amazing seeing that although the use of letter press has changed, gone from everday use for news papers for example, to today special, expensive one off prints. The process is unchanged and still gives a beautiful effect today.

PRINTER VISIT : FINE PRINT / BEYOND DIGITAL

My friends dad owns a printers so I went to go see his company based in Ripon with Lizzie and Emma. It was really good to get to see the printers such as liphography printers in real life as well as the industrial digital printers. The liphography printers were not in use on the day we went to visit as Kevin (the owner) explained that there is not as high demand for liphographic prints as runs are genrally getting smaller as target audiences are so zoomed in you don't have to outreach to so many people and people are also using the interenet to do promotion and things instead. So the liphography printers only run once every few days, where as the digital printers run constantly everday all day.
It was really useful to get to talk about printing and setting up document from the perspective of an actual printer rather than a graphic designer and to be shown how processes work and also things that  go wrong in print.
From going to see Kevin I feel like I have a greater understand of print which will really help when decided the content for my print manual.
